title : Reflection
Through this project. I can tell that there is a very big difference between Singapore and Sri Lanka. Especially in terms of social stability, the government in Singapore always tries to solve any conflicts that occur in Singapore as soon as possible. Preventing it from turning into a major crisis for the nation. But in Sri Lanka. Conflicts are common, especially between the Tamils and the Sinhalese. While in Singapore, the four races. Chinese, Indian, Malays and the Eurasians live together in harmony, unlike in Sri Lanka. Therefore there is no conflict in Singapore, especially in terms of races.
I have learnt that the government of Singapore always tries to monitor or resolve any conflict in the nation. But in Sri Lanka, multiple conflicts exist. In the past and in the current day. Therefore rendering the nation not a conducive place to live in. -Christopher |

title : Reflection
The difference between Singapore and Sri Lanka is that Singapore ensures that the citizens are treated equally and that social harmony must be embraced. This is the exact opposite, as to the situation in Sri Lanka, which strikes the difference between the success of both countries, as well as which country is more peaceful and good environment for living and a high standard of living for everyone in the country.
The importance of social harmony is to ensure that peace in a country is maintained to ensure the safety of the citizens as well as the success of the country. Which leads to the citizens socio economic status and their ability to climb the social level. This group work has taught us the importance of co=operating with one another and how people are treated can greatly affect something else on a big scale in long term. This has also taught us to be more courteous, sensitive and aware of the people around us. -Jethro |

title : Conclusion
We feel that the University admission criteria is the most significant and important cause of the conflict in Sri Lanka. This is because for a country, we feel that education is the most important factor in becoming a successful country. Without education, the people will have a harder time finding jobs that have good pay or even being able to find a job will be hard. With the people of the country having such mediocre jobs as a source of income for themselves, the Tamil's socio economic status will eventually become stagnant and they are unable to climb up the social ladder as compared to the Sinhalese, who are given much more privileges and benefits. With a stagnant socio economic status, the Tamils' standard of living will be lowered and hence, their quality of life will be compromised. With such factors on the low, the Tamils' will eventually feel indignant as they are discriminated purely based on their race.
However, if compared to the cause of conflict - 'Citizenship rights' , which only affects the first generation of Tamils in Sri Lanka and not the subsequent generations which are born in Sri Lanka, the cause 'University admission criteria' has a greater significance in contributing to the conflict. If compared to the cause 'Resettlement', which is not based on the factor, education, 'University admission criteria' is also more significant in contributing to the conflict in Sri Lanka. Finally, if compared to the cause, 'Sinhala-only' policy which only affects the chances and opportunities to get jobs and promotions, the cause 'University admission criteria' is based on the root problem - education. Therefore, the 'University admission criteria' is also more significant in contributing to the conflict in Sri Lanka. Hence, the cause 'University admission criteria' has the greatest significance in contributing to the conflict in Sri Lanka. |

title : Introduction
The Sri Lanka conflict took place in Sri Lanka itself and it affected India, its neighbouring country as well to the point where India had to become a mediator between the Sri Lanka Government and the LTTE. The Sri Lanka also took place during the 1950s, and it has lasted for more than 20 years
What is the Sri lanka conflict about? The Sri Lanka is about the dispute between the SriLanka Government not wanting to accede to the request of the LTTE of giving them an independent state, where they think they can ensure their own rights. Why did the conflict come about? This i because the Sri Lanka Government is bias towards the Sinhalese and gives the Sinhalese more priority and benefits compare to that of the Tamils. This caused unhappiness and a conflict between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. Since the Tamils felt that they were being treated unfairly, they felt that needed to have an independent state, to ensure their rights. However, the Sri Lanka Government refused to their request and as such, the tamils decided that they have to use violence to get what they want - to form a militant group, known as the LTTE or the Tamil Tigers. How is the Sri lanka conflict caused ? Tamils extremists believe that their culture is the oldest and very ancient, and all other South Indian languages "came" from Tamilso they are superior to Other South Indians (Dravidas). They also believe except tamil, all South Indian languages are corrupted by the influence of Sanakrit and Hindi. So the most feverish and die-hard tamil fanatics want to remove all "foreign" words form other South Indian languages and make them more "tamilish". Since the tamil extremists consider Sri Lanka also as a part of the "greater tamil nadu", despite it is a country with 81% of the population are Sinhala with their own language, life stye, customs and culture. Problems started showing up when tamils tried do impose the "true tamil culture" with the help of some myths like " neanderthals and gorillas who lived in Sri Lanka during pre-historic period were tamils" etc and as per the instruction from the Master tamils in tamilnadu , who deviced the "Dravida " mania. Sinhalese got pissed of with this and introduced Sinhala Only act in 1956. The trigger was a deadly attack on Sri Lankan Army patrol unit that killed 13 soldiers , in 1983.That snowballed into a Sinhala retaliation and pogroms those killed 3000 tamils. Citizenship In 1948, Sri Lanka granted citizenship to only those who were either born in Sri Lanka or those whose fathers and grandfathers were born there. Many Indians were stateless. India tried to help but many Indians continued to be stateless in the late 1980s. Jobs in Government British placed Tamils in powerful jobs as they were good in English.1956 Official Language Act: Sinhala became language of administration. Tamils held peaceful demonstration but was disrupted by supporters of Sinhala language. University admission. Before 1970, Tamils were happy as education system was based on merit. 1970 onwards, Tamils had to score higher than the Sinhalese to enter most of the popular courses in the university like medicine. Resettlement of population . The government implemented a policy to provide land for the poor Sinhalese peasants. The peasants were transferred from the densely-populated south western and central areas into the Tamil areas. However, the Buddhist monks and Sri Lankan Army came with them. Who are the Sri Lankans ? The Sri Lankans are mainly Sinhalese , 4.3% Sri Lankan Tamil , 5.1% Indian Tamil , 8.0% Moor. The Buddhist are the main religious group in Sri Lanka , with 76.7% percent , 7.9% Hindus , 6.1% Christians , 8.5% Muslims. The Sinhalese ancestors are natives of Sri Lanka , most of them are Buddhists and they speak Sinha. Sri Lankan Tamil are the descendants of Tamils who have been living in this country since 300BCE , most of us are hindus and they speak Tamil. The Indian Tamils ancestors were brought to Sri Lanka by the colonial masters to work in the tea plantations when Sri Lanka was colonized by the British. They have been here since the 1800s , most of them are Hindus and they speak Tamil too . |

title : 4 Causes of conflict in Sri Lanka. PEEL
One of the conflicts in Sri Lanka is about Citizenship rights. When Sri Lanka gained independance, the government passed the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948. This granted citizenship only to those who were born in Sri Lanka or those who forefathers were born there. Therefore many Indian Tamils were stateless. They did not have basic rights like Education, houses and voting. Because of this Citizenship act, India helped the Indian Tamils who were stateless but it was not carried out fully by the Sri Lankan government due to ethnic violence. Therefore the consequences of this citizenship rights caused a great conflict in Sri Lanka.
Another conflict in Sri Lanka is about the National Language in Sri Lanka. Under british rule, english-educated tamils in Sri Lanka could easily enter the government service and get promoted. On the other hand Sinhalese were disadvantaged as they could not read or write english well. Therefore when Sri Lanka achieved independance. Sinhala was made the country's official language in 1956. Tamils were then given 3 years to learn Sinhala or they would be dismissed from government service. A peaceful demonstration against the official language act turned out to be riot. The Tamils were then upset, and found it much harder to get promoted or to even be able to find jobs for themselves. This conflict between the two languages caused alot of riots and tension, causing another great conflict in Sri Lanka. University admission criteria was is another one of the many conflicts in Sri Lanka. Before 1970 university admission was based on merit and the examinations were in English. Therefore this benefitted the english-educated Tamils. The admission of tamils were almost proportional to the amount of Sinhalese even though Tamils only made up 18% of the population of Sri Lanka. After 1970 Tamils students had to score higher marks than the Sinhalese students to enter the same courses in Universities. A fixed number of places were also reserved for the Sinhalese. Therefore , this conflict has greatly reduced the number of Tamils going into University from College as the Tamils will gradually feel that they are not being treated farily. Resettlement is the last of the many conflicts in Sri Lanka. The different races of Sri Lanka were not evenly distributed throughout the island. With the indian tamils concentrated in the highland districts as the majority of them are tea plantation workers. While the Sri Lanka Tamils make up more than 95% of the population in the Jaffna peninsula. Sinhalese being found in large numbers everywhere except in the Jaffna and the Batticaloa districts. Under the Resettlement policy of the 1950s. Sinhalese peasants were transferred to traditional tamil areas for them to live on and cultivate padi. Buddhist monks and the Sinhalese Army also moved in to the Tamil areas. Therefore this is yet another conflict but not one with that great an impact on the country as compared to the other causes of the conflict. |
